Patellar Tendonitis or 'Jumpers Knee' is a painful condition caused by inflammation of the patellar tendon resulting in pain in the front of the knee.

Your quadriceps are the large muscle at the front of your thigh which attaches to your tibia (shin bone) via the patellar tendon.  The quadriceps muscles main function is to straighten the knee during movement such as running, jumping, kicking, cycling etc.  During prolonged activities or through repetition the patellar tendon comes under increasing strain and damage can occur.

Symptoms of patellar tendonitis can range from an ache or stiffness in the knee to a sharp pain during sporting activites such as running, cycling or jumping.  Everyday activities such as climbing the stairs may also be painful.

The most common causes of patellar tendonitis are:

  • an increase in intensity of training
  • an increase in frequency of training
  • repeated training on a hard surface
  • poor strength of the quadriceps muscle
  • lack of flexibility exercises
  • overweight
  • foot conditions such as flat foot
  • muscle inbalance

There are several factors that can predispose clients to developing patellar tendonitis, these include:

  • Poor core stability
  • muscle tightness of the quadriceps and hamstrings
  • excessive training
  • inadequate warm up
  • incorrect footwear
  • ankle, knee or hip joint stiffness.
