Achilles Tendonitis is where the achilles tendon gets inflammed and causes the associated discomfort and pain.

The Achilles tendon is the largest tendon in the human body and it's purpose is to lift the heel, signs of Achilles tendonitis include:

  • An aching or stiffness at the back of the heel/ankle
  • Restricted movement
  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Pain becoming more frequent during daily activites

As with most forms of tendonitis, the inflammation is normally brought on by overuse of the tendon.  With Achilles tendonitis this may be through repetitive activites such as running or jumping or wearing high heeled shoes all day.

Another common cause is an imbalance in the hips due to hours spent sitting at a desk or driving a car.  When you spend the majority of your day sitting down it causes your hip flexors to tighten, this will make your stride shorter when you walk or run meaning your heel will lift up earlier; this means there is less eccentric loading of the calf muscles; your leg will then swing forwards with less force; this forward swing is required to naturally supinate the other foot.  A less natural supination will mean that the muscles must work harder resulting in tight calf muscles.  Making sure you have the correct supporting footwear is very important in avoiding Achilles tendonitis.

At Optimum Performance Clinic we offer our clients suffering with Achilles tendonitis a relatively new and exciting treatment called Shockwave Therapy.  This therapy is able to get in deeper to the fascia than is possible with massage.  The treatment is completely natural and encourages the healing process of the body; this allows the body to naturally heal itself in a fraction of the time taken compared with the more traditional methods and without the need for painkillers.  The amount of treatments needed completey depends on the severity of the condition but even our most chronic patients have been cured in 7 sessions.
